More progress on the flannel quilt

I got the rest of the units sewn together that make up one half of the 4-patch blocks.

I started pressing them and matching them up into pairs

I still have some 3 1/2" squares left

so I am going to take the leftover bits and make a few more 2" x 3 1/2" pieces to sew together then add on the 3 1/2" squares.

I was so hot at work yesterday. With having to help clean up the dusty footprints, I was sweating. This morning it is 70 degrees with the humidity 92%. It is not cooler like it was forecasted. When it is that sticky the construction dirt sticks to your skin and clothes. It is not fun.

A little sewing

I only got a few more units sewed together for the pink and lavender flannel quilt. These still need pressed and matched up to make 4 patch blocks.

I had a tree guy meet me after work. I need to take down a very tall and bushy pine tree that is about 10-12 feet away from the house. I have had the tree trimmed so the branches don't hit the house, but now the tree is getting lopsided and trimming a 50' tree is not going to happen. There was a raccoon that used the tree to jump on the roof last Saturday so I am getting rid of his pathway and taking the tree down. My neighbor has a beautiful magnolia tree that branches run into this pine, so it will be good for that specimen tree to have the pine removed. Then when the magnolia blooms in the spring I will be able to see a lot more of it and enjoy the color.

Work on the canopy continues. Here is a picture of underneath. Piles of dirt and materials everywhere! The concrete guys were pouring and forming curbs, the snow melt guys were installing pipes, and the mason was setting up for building the columns. Lots of action!

As I cleaned up the studio I came across these pieces again. I know I have shown them before. I had a box of vintage fabric given to me and these pieces were in it. I laid them out and now I need to count the pieces to see if they are all there or I need to go digging thru the box for a misplaced piece. I want to use vintage off white fabric for the background so I am going to have to go thru my stash and see what I can find. Old pillow cases would be a perfect background fabric and I know I have a few of those.

I ended up fixing my shower control valve, doing a load of laundry and watching a movie "No Country for Old Men". The movie was on the list of 100 movies to see and I was disappointed. Did the bad guy kill the guy's wife? How does someone walk away from a car accident with a compound fracture to the arm and continue on his quest to find the guy who had the money? The whole thing was far fetched.

At work we are building a MRI room. Much more complicated than I would have thought. First, the ceiling and part of the walls needed to be covered with fire resistant plywood. Then part of the walls, the ceiling, and floor needed to be covered with steel sheets. I have no idea about why some areas get the steel sheeting and others don't.

Then the floor was covered with 3" of concrete on top of the steel sheeting.

This is after the basement ceiling, which is under the MRI room, had been reinforced with I-beams and covered in steel sheeting. We are not done yet! Next there is another layer of fire resistant plywood and more after that! Those walls are going to be thick once they are done! In case of a tornado I am headed to the MRI room for shelter! The room is below ground with masonry walls.

Then the new front canopy is going up. This will be the main entrance for drop offs and pickups.

They are finishing up welding the deck on this morning. I have no idea what is next, but I will watch and post a picture tomorrow of the progress. The concrete curbs and sidewalks are getting poured also so there is a lot of action at the main entrance. We need to have this done before winter sets in.

Dealing with piles

It was hot this past weekend - in the mid 80's - way hotter than it is suppose to be this time of year. The humidity is brutal too so I stayed indoors in the A/C as much as possible. I did have to mow and trim. It was hard with the sun beating on me.

Since I stayed indoors it was time to do a bit of cleaning and deal with piles. You know, those piles that just seem to appear! I moved some scraps around and emptied three containers. Two of the containers I wanted to put the flannel projects in them, so I had one for the baby quilt top blocks and the other I put the blocks in for the 9-patch quilt. Then I had kept the box from the new fry pan I bought a couple months ago and it was perfect for the pink and lavender pieces. Now if I need my big table for laying out something it will be easy to just move those containers.

My sewing studio looks so much better with the clean up this weekend. I also did some cooking, dishes, and visiting family this weekend too. The temps this week are 87 today, 85 tomorrow, 81 Wednesday and 69 Thursday. It is going to be brutal at work with the heat and humidity so I am looking forward to Thursday. So with the cool down finally happening maybe next weekend I can get the garage straightened up and work on the rock borders for the large flower bed. I would like to get the pile of dirt out of the driveway before it snows.

It's Friday for me!

I am taking tomorrow off work and I am looking forward to a three day weekend. It has been warm and humid at work and Monday the high is forecasted to be 85! It will be like an oven in here again.

I have lots of things planned and as usual, more planned than any one person can accomplish in three days. I am going to try though!

I also have a pile of shorter 2" wide pieces that I need to pair up and sew. I have no idea how many of these units I will end up making or how many I need for the quilt top; I am just using up the pink and lavender flannel I have and see what happens! I would call that winging it!

Busy times

I know I have been missing for a few days. Work last week was insane. 10 hour days is just too much especially when the problems just keep coming.

This weekend was not long enough so to sum it up:
* worked on the project I can't show you Saturday and Sunday. I am making good progress though!
* Did laundry and lots of dishes
* cooked chickens, deboned them, and ended up with lots of broth for making brown rice, bok choy and chicken for lunches. Tonight I will skim the fat, divide this up, and freeze it.

* worked the merch booth for my nephew Saturday night. It was a church celebration for their anniversary - I don't remember how many years - but they had lots of food stands and I bought some handmade pierogis - potato, cheese, and bacon. They were so good!

* and finished out the weekend by making oatmeal raisin cookies for some of the guys at work that helped me out with some issues last week.
