Pants are sewn on; what's next?

I watched the movie "The Help" while I stitched on the pants to the "Where's Jimmy?" quilt. I had to fill out another form for the Akron Art Prize with more details. I measured the quilt and it is 88 1/4" wide and 87 1/2" high. I used approx. 2700 yards of thread to quilt it. I did not sew the entire pair of pants to the quilt. I stitched about four or five places along the left leg, the entire waistband, and several places along the inside of the right leg. I wanted the pants to sort of float on the top of the piece.

I dug out my next project which is another Halloween quilt, but made with just Moda fabrics. I have not decided what I am going to make yet, but I have plenty of fabric choices.

Binding done!

The ocean quilt is almost done! Yeah! I put a facing type binding on the quilt and got it all hand stitched down last evening while watching a Dirty Harry movie. Here is the quilt with the inspiration for this quilt pinned on it. I will work on appliqueing the pants on tonight.

You may ask, "What is the deal with those yellow pants?" Well, they are a pair of Jimmy Buffett's pants which were given to my brother years ago by the wardrobe lady. My brother toured with Jimmy for three years. She was downsizing the wardrobe closet and gave these to my brother to give to me. I had meet her several times and we would talk about sewing. I thought for years about these pants and what I would do with them. So now they are on a quilt named "Where's Jimmy?" (Thanks for the title Joanna!) Here is the label inside the pants.

Once Keim Lumber delivers the hanging board today I can finish stitching the hanging pocket. Put a label on this, clean it with a lint roller, and it is finished!

The finished date has changed

I worked Friday evening and Saturday getting the quilting done on the ocean quilt. Saturday evening I started on the binding. I received an email from the Akron Art Prized organizers that they want a picture of the piece on August 6. I was aiming to have this done by the 17th which is the day before it could be hung, but oops, the date has moved on me! So tonight I am going to have to concentrate on hand stitching the binding on and then get the pants appliqued on so I can take pictures of it.

The pressure is on!

I received an email from the Akron Art Prize and I need to submit descriptions and pictures of my ocean quilt by August 6! You know what I will be doing this weekend!. The backing fabric I bought wasn't wide enough even with two strips sewn together so I added a strip of leftover fabrics to make the backing wide enough.

I have to call my lumber yard today and get an 8' length of wood for hanging this quilt.

Suprise fabric and more progress

I received a package yesterday of Halloween three fat quarters that I ordered, but totally forgot about. Now that both quilt tops are made, I may use these for the binding.

I now have three rows quilted all the way from one side of the quilt to the other. Yeah! Four more half rows to go and this quilt will be quilted!

Quilting along and zinnias

I am slowly working my way across the ocean part of this quilt and I am almost all the way across several rows! This quilt is a few inches shy of 8' across.

Rocky III and IV were on again. Everybody needs to be able to do this! LOL! How many hours do you think he spent in the gym to get to this point?

Ocean quilt and Rocky

I finally get to concentrate on what I want to do and that is right now the ocean quilt. I turned on the TV and there was an Rocky marathon on. For me it is the perfect backdrop for machine quilting! I ran thru 4 or 5 bobbins last evening and made some nice progress.

I need to keep pounding away at this quilt and get it done before another sewing emergency shows up. This piece needs to be done by August 17.
