Giving away quilts

The Harley quilt got picked up Sunday. She loved it. She gave me a hoodie the had the logo for the poker run.

My son and DIL got a new king bed so none of the previous quilts I had made them fit. I knew my millennium quilt would fit - it's 8' x 10' - so when I went for a visit Saturday I gave it to them. That was hard to let go of that quilt, but it just sat in a pile ever since I finished it. since I don't know how long it will take me to make the quilt my DIL picked out, this is at least something they can use.

I worked on my new garden bed and my deck garden. Slowly I am getting closer to being done. I planted some of the squash. I will have to finish tonight as I was running out of time last night. I had to put the fence up to keep the deer from eating the squash leaves.

I cleaned off the deck and planted a squash plant in one pot to see how it would do and the two kale plants in another. I also planted some bok choy seeds in the kale pot and bok choy in another pot. I wanted to plant some parsley, but I can't find the seeds I bought.

The deck contractor came Friday night and now I am just waiting to find out what it going to cost me to have my deck replaced. The deck is in bad shape; it was bad when I bought the place. The birds like to pick bugs out of the rotting railing!

All sewn

Thrusday night I fought thru being tired and got the recycle shirt top all sewn together. I still need to square it up. It will be approximately 40" x 52". I am behind in posting this because the internet has been totally uncooperative! It is now 6:30 a.m. on Saturday and it is working good for me.

I worked outside for 2 1/2 hours Thursday evening transplanting some of my Lenten Roses to the new garden bed and the cora bell bed. I am hoping they will deter the deer in both beds.

I put arrows to the three additional little Lenten rose plants that I planted around the purple cora bells that the deer ate most of the leaves off of about two weeks ago. You can see that some of the leaves have grown back. Hopefully planting this many Lenten roses so close to the purple cora bells will discourage the deer from touching those plants again. Lenten roses are poisonous to deer.

As you can see even though I dug up 5 plants so far, this bed is still quite full of plants. I still need to put two more in the new garden bed.

Almost sewn together

I got a bit more sewn together on the AHIQ recycled shirt project. Here is what is looks like now.

I bought some Liriope plants the other day. I had bought some starts last fall off of ebay, but I only see that three have come up so far. Bummer. Now I just need to get these in the ground.

My Shasta daisies are full of buds! They are going to put on quite a show once they bloom.

Ad Hoc Imporvisational quilt - June prompt

The prompt this month was for clothing recycling. Well, I have plenty of projects to fit that! The first project will be the piece I started in the Gee's Bend workshop at QuiltCon in 2015. We were to bring some old clothes and work on starting a quilt top out of them. I brought two denim shirts that I did not wear, a beige shirt, and a red polo shirt. I remember Mary Ann Pettway asking me how big I was going to make my piece. I said I would keep sewing until I run out of fabric from the shirts. She smiled and approved. Here is the piece as it stands right now. When time ran out the ladies were happy to pose for pictures. I asked them to sign my piece. They looked at me and said really? You want us to write on your piece? I said yes! They said nobody ever asked them to do that before. I was glad two of the ladies dated it too.

So now I will play around with the fabric I have left and get this top finished. I have the perfect place to hang it in my living room once I get it done. I also have a pile of clothes that were my Dad's that I want to make a couple quilts out of for a couple of my brothers and I have a box of linens that I have collected over the years and think they will make an interesting quilt.

I managed to get a bit more cleaned up in the future garden bed. Here is the current condition. I had to leave that fern! It was too pretty to rip out!

At the far end there is still some weeds I need to clean up and I ran out of rocks. I have some concrete blocks that I will used until more rocks find their way into my life. I did dig a hole in the bed as you can see with the darker dirt. I plan on transplanting some of my Lenten roses in this bed to grow along with the squash.

5th finish for 2020

The Harley t-shirt quilt is finally done! It is 93.5" x 88.5". It is a donation for a poker run that raises money that is donated to charity in memory of Andrea Torres that died in a car accident. Her mother puts on the event and is just the sweetest lady. This is the 5th quilt I have made for this event. This year is the 10th anniversary of Andrea's passing so I wanted to have so extra significance in the design. I decided the X would be represented in the quilt signifying 10 as a Roman numeral and for a hug.

Just so you don't think I never get tired, after working hard May 31 thru June 4 I crashed physically on the 5th. I had a headache, was so tired, and had a bit of dizziness. I just couldn't do anything. I hadn't felt that bad in a long time. On Saturday I was feeling good enough that I could sew the binding on the Harley quilt. I finally was feeling better by Saturday late afternoon that I decided to work on my garden bed for a couple hours. Here is what it looked like to begin with. What a mess! Last summer I had dumped the excess top soil that had lived in the driveway for two years in this bed and never did anything with it.

After running errands Sunday morning, I worked another 45 minutes on the garden then went inside. I went back out at 6:30 and worked another two hours. I had picked up six bags of cypress mulch to edge the bed and here is what it looks like now. I would say I was 3/4 the way done with getting this whole area cleaned up. I am way behind in getting my squash plants in the ground!

On the list this week is getting the garden bed done - I am going to have to get more mulch - and to tear the garage apart again to find out where a smell is coming from. Yes, I got the garage cleaned and now I have an awful smell like a mouse or something has died. Ugh!

Getting things done

Although I have been tired the last few days, I am fighting thru it and getting stuff done. I managed to finally get the binding sewn on the Harley quilt! Yeah rah! I am going to hand stitch it on the backside.

I got the window finished - hardware, screens, and paint!

I got a first coat of paint on the man door garage jam and trim. I also took the time to clean the door - both sides- and it looks so much better. There is one spot of something that I am not sure what it is so I will have to try goo gone or carefully scraping it to see if I can get it off.

With all this cleaning I have found some trim pieces that I saved that were existing. I found this piece of trim

After a bit of a sand and a coat of paint it will be installed where it belongs

Then I found this threshold that goes in the master bath doorway. A good sanding and varnish will bring it back to life.

There is one more piece of trim I need to find for the stairway. I will run across it one of these days.

Been busy

I have worked and worked and worked around the house. I am happy with the way the garage cleanup and organizing has gone. I decided to paint and trim out the window in the garage. I had to fix up the drywall above and below the window where the tape was loose so there was two coats of mud and some sanding that occurred. Here is the before and where I am at right now. I still need to caulk, fill in the nail holes, give it one more coat of paint and add the hardware, but I am glad to have this much done.

The weather was cooler yesterday so it was time to paint the laundry/utility room door. This door goes into the garage. This was the only surface in the laundry/utility room that I had not painted. The color looks the same but it is not. The new paint job has more gray in it. It looks so much better.

Monday I mowed and trimmed; a job that seems never ending! I was trimming over at the cora bell bed and noticed that Sunday night the deer came along and ate most of the leaves off the three larger purple cora bell plants - UGH! I am going to have to dig up more Lenten rose small plants and plant them even closer to the purple cora bells to see if that will deter the deer. I just hope the plants can recover.

My internet has been working awful lately. It is slow and sometimes just doesn't work at all. So here I am posting late tonight and it is working a bit better. I did get the binding cut for the Harley quilt.
