Binding the t-shirt quilt

I finally have gotten the binding sewn on the t-shirt quilt!

I am going to stitch the binding by hand so I will be getting that started after I did done with my job which I am working from home.

Similar skill set just different tools

I spent the last couple of days working hard trying to get the laundry/utility room finished up so I can install the new floor. The big job left to do was to trim out the window and repair the drywall above and below the window. In this before picture you can see in the upper left the drywall is cracked and blistered.

I was lucky that behind the drywall was solid wood so I only had to cut out the worst spot instead of removing drywall from between two studs.

The drywall at the bottom of the window was a mess so I had to remove and replace it.

I got the drywall mudded then pulled out the window trim.

Got paint on the trim

I have to jump around from task to task as I wait for mud and paint to dry. Time to install the extension jams.

It is now Sunday and I can install the trim that I painted.

I needed to use that insulating foam to fill in the gaps around the window, but I only had one plastic straw which the foam goes thru so you can get way back into the gaps.

So I decided I would go ahead and finish out the window in the sewing studio and get it to the point so I could foam it too. Here was the sewing studio window at the start.

Before I did anything I needed to change one of the window crank mechanisms. Before the ten year warranty ran out I called the manufacturer and got a replacement. I have had the replacement for at least 7 years! Time to fix it! Here the old one and the new one installed. Fear had kept me from tackling this job which turned out to be very easy to do.

The window trim and extension jams were already painted so that made for quick work to get this window to the point I could foam it. Here is the state of the sewing window right now. I can now install the trim on the outside of the window. I will still need to fill in nail holes, touch up the paint, and install the hardware, but that should not take too long.

The laundry/utility room looks like this. I got started on the trim, but was just too tired to do anymore last night. I am very close to being done and I am happy with how it is turning out.

So instead of a rotary cutter I used a miter saw. Instead of a sewing machine and thread, I used nails and a nail gun. Both tasks take rulers. Work has to proceed in a certain order just like making a quilt. I do not have the skill set to make fine furniture and I have no desire to anyway. I could never afford to hire a carpenter to do this work.

I did get the binding pressed for the t-shirt quilt and my goal is to get that quilt finished by the end of the month.

Where have I been?

Tuesday I spent most of the day helping my brother finish packing. He hired 3 college guys to load the truck which was a big help! That bubble wrap is on my work station. My job was to wrap all the remaining items hanging on the walls.

Another brother stacked the stuff in the truck. He is good at loading! You would not believe how much he can pack in a space. His son is the musician and he always loads the equipment we need for shows.

Check out the cactus. My brother brought it home when he was on tour with Eurythmics a long time ago. It has been sitting at the loading brother's house on his patio.

Just about all loaded

After I was done with my duties I had to go look at some used cars for my son. His car was in the shop and when he was driving his wife's car the engine blew. Not worth fixing so he needs to find a car. I didn't get home until 6:30; I was hungry, and exhausted. Wednesday I took a day off and was too tired to get anything done.

This morning I went to work to bring home my monitor, laptop, and all my stuff to work from home today and tomorrow. I am not sure how it will be after that. This virus stuff scares me! I am all set up for now!

A little sewing, a little painting

On the sewing side I did get the binding sewn together. It still needs pressed, but I had a busy weekend and that is all the time I had to spend at the machine.

Saturday I worked in the laundry/utility room all day. I got the ceiling painted and a second coat on the walls. Here is what this wall looked like before

Here it is now. Much better if I do say so myself!

Here is a shot of the room before I started. You can see I had one cabinet door that wasn't installed. I tried, but the hinges would not snap into place.

One of my brothers stopped over to borrow my wallpapering tools and he hung the door for me! Now it looks like I am getting somewhere! I also got some of the wire shelves hung back up.

So what is left to do in this room besides the floor? The window over the washer and dryer and paint the wall behind the dryer. I will have to replace a piece of the drywall above the window that is damaged, but that should not be a problem. The hardest part will be pulling out the washer and dryer so I can work.

Sunday I spent most of the day cleaning partly due to the fact that I have misplaced my utility bill. I was hoping that with cleaning up I would find it, but so far that hasn't happened.

Binding cut

It has been a long couple of days at work and coming home dog tired, I didn't get much done. I did get the binding cut for the t-shirt quilt and found a piece of fabric for the label.

The operating rooms are almost done. The protective covering on the floors has been removed so now the rooms are looking more done. We are scheduled to turn over the 4 ORs by the end of the month to the hospital. The hospital staff will be cleaning and sterilizing the rooms so they can put them in service. In the next phase, we have two ORs that are going to have some remodeling and two more new ones to build.

I have no idea what I will be getting done this weekend. My brother is coming into town earlier than scheduled to pack up the moving truck. Shows he was going to be working have been cancelled because of the coronavirus. It is hard to say at this point what I will be doing day to day, except I know the 17th I will be helping to wrap any remaining pictures that are still hanging on the walls. My hope is to finish painting the walls and the ceiling. The remaining project will be to paint the window, repair some drywall above the window, and paint behind the washer. Once that is done I can install the new floor.

Finally done!

I finally have that t-shirt quilt all quilted! Now on to the binding! Here is the last area that was completed.

I did get some of the sanding done on this wall. It needs a bit more sanding before it is ready to paint. I am getting close to having all the walls painted!

The only area left to do is around the window, which I have not shown you yet, and behind the washer. My plan is to work on that area this weekend. I want to pull out the washer and dryer from the wall and leave them out until I need to do a load on Sunday. It will take some careful planning to allow for dry time in order to get this area completed in a weekend. Details to come.

At work the trailer was a mess! I spend time yesterday vacuuming the floors and gathering trash. I just couldn't stand the mess! The guys just think the cleaning service will take care of it, but they only come once every two weeks. Here is the pile of trash that was gathered. They keep materials that can't be left outside in the trailer. When the guys come in and get adhesives, etc. and they empty a box they just leave the box! The wastebaskets get filled pretty quickly too so those all needed emptied.

One of the workers got a front end loader, chucked all the trash in the loaders bucket, and hauled it to the dumpster. So much better! My job is just so glamorous! LOL!!!

Some quilting!

I now am down to 2.5% left to quilt. I got this gray shirt done last evening

and I have half of this teal shirt done.

I did get two coats of paint on the corner where I patched the hole and hung up the shelf. I need to get something completed so I can start putting this room back together. My studio is right next to the laundry/utility room and it is a mess with all the stuff I had to move into there.

I now see flower heads on the daffodils next to the house. It got up to 64 yesterday which is way off of the normal chart for NE Ohio!

At work they are now bringing in fill dirt to build out the rest of the area.

Across the street it is both sand and fill dirt. It is raining today so the guys are working in the mud.
