Back to the scrap bin

While I wait for the t-shirts to show up, I went back to wrangeling scraps as 2022 for me is the Year of the Scraps. I still have some left from the four green baby chevron quilts. I paired up the cutoffs from the sides and sewed them into blocks.

There is not enough for a quilt so I pulled out scraps that I had sorted and were from chevron quilts that were made several years ago. I got a good start on pairing them up.

I won't trim the blocks until I get enough made to do something with. I still have quite a pile to go thru.

I haven't had as much time to work on my cross stitch because I am trying to walk at lunchtime again. I need the excerise more than I need to cross stitch. Here is where I was two weeks ago and where I am now.

Harley quilt backing

I got the fabric washed and sewn together for the backing for the Harley t-shirt quilt. The width of the quilt is going to be about 89" so two strips was not going to be wide enough. I pieced together another fabric and put a 12" strip down the middle of the backing. Tonight I will press it.

Today is trash day so everyone's bins are out. LOL!!

Harley t-shirt quilt progress

I have now sewn as much as I can on the Harley t-shirt quilt top until the box to t-shirts arrive. I got the left half of the quilt sewn together last night and I really like the checkerboard effect.

I received a text from Andrea and she said she will ship out the box of Harley t-shirts to me on Wednesday. Hopefully I will get them by the weekend so I can finish this top. I did dig out some backing fabric so tonight after I get it washed, I will sew together the back and then that will be ready when I need it. I ought to go ahead and get the binding ready too while I wait for the shirts to arrive.  No progress on the trash bin yet.  

Harley t-shirt progress, V-day small, and snow

My trip home to and from work on Thursday was long. The roads were awful and it was still snowing. Many people did not show up on Thursday. I stayed home on Friday; I will explain this later in this post. Meanwhile I worked on the Harley t-shirt quilt and got quite a bit done. I trimmed all the shirts and started sewing them together in columns. I am waiting on the box of t-shirts before I sew together the column with that brick red shirt and I hope there is at least two light colored shirts so I can finish out the column on the right. I scrounged around to find the right sized designs for the spots I needed to fill.

I made a two cross stitch smalls and finished them plus one I had finished stitching a while ago. I can't show you a picture of one of them, because it is for my sister for V-day and she reads my blog. I want to at least surprise her with what it looks like. Here is the one I made for myself. The trim was a piece I found that I had dyed a long time ago and the heart was a button that I remember buying a card of them in NJ on my honeymoon a long, long, time ago. I had to break off the hand soldered shank to glue it on.

I need to make a few more to fill my new bowl I bought off of Etsy.

Friday I went out to shovel. The city had been by and plowed what they could of the cul-de-sac. The problem being the neighbor had left his trash bin nearly in the middle of the cul-de-sac. It has been there for almost 3 weeks now. I saw him walk out two weeks ago to put trash in it and then just leave in! My neighbor said she saw him this past week get a shovel, shovel around the bin, throw trash in it, close the lid and just leave it. Everyone has to drive around it and the plow guy can't do their job which resulted in lots of snow left in the street in front of my driveway that I ended up having to shovel! I had already called the city on him about the trash bin and the trailer that has been parked out front for 2 1/2 years. Where the trailer is parked is the best spot for the plow to put snow. He is not being a good neighbor! In this picture you can see the trash bin, the red lines show what I needed to shovel to get the car out, and the blue line is the end of my driveway.

Here is the path I dug out. You get a better idea of how much extra snow I had to shovel. I spent 2 1/2 hours shoveling Friday morning. The blue line is about where the end of the driveway is located.

Hopefully the city comes out and tags his trash can this week. We have a chance of snow later this week.

Harley progress and snow

I made a lot of progress on the Harley t-shirt quilt layout last night! I am not crazy about how dark that brick red shirt is so if the shirts Andrea is mailing to me has a light colored shirt in the pile, I will be changing that shirt out. The size of the pieces around the outside are going to be narrower and I plan on cutting the rest of the shirts all the same size. Here is what it looks like now.

Overnight we only got an 1" of snow. The roads weren't horrible so I managed to make it to work safely. I left really early, about 5:50 a.m., and with the schools closed there wasn't much traffic. I put the car in 4-wheel drive and took it slow over hill and dale. It is a 15 mile one way trip to the office. It is snowing all day today according to the forecast. Maybe we will get enough they will send us home early!

Harley quilt - Day 1 and a follower's chevron quilt top

I got a few t-shirts cut up, interfaced and hung on the design wall. I also dug out of that box some shirts that were already interfaced. I have more non-black t-shirts this year so I was thinking about how to arrange the t-shirts this year. It dawned on me I have never made a checkboard quilt so that is going to be my layout this year. I don't know that I have enough light colored shirts. The lady I am making this for said she had a few more shirts to send me so hopefully there will be some light colored shirts in the box.

Here is a picture of a chevron quilt top made by one of my blog followers using the tutorials I posted. C has bought one of my project bags, we have bartered fabric for more project bags and cross stitch charts. She made this top with shirt fabrics she would buy by the pound at the Goodwill where she use to live. Fabulous blues! Good job C!

7th finish for 2022 and next project

I had this one done on Sunday, but I didn't post it yesterday since that tutorial was so long. I made this with scraps left from the green chevron quilts. This is the second quilt made with those scraps. It turned out 45" x 53" - a bit bigger than what I usually make for a baby quilt.

Here are the scraps left from this quilt and I still have a bunch of triangles left from trimming the green chevron quilts, so that means there will be at least two more scrap quilts before all the scraps are used up.

The scraps are going to be set aside so I can dedicate February to making the Harley raffle quilt. I piled the shirts that were sent to me a few weeks ago on my big table, pulled out the box of leftovers from previous quilts, and dug out a bolt of interfacing. The design wall is empty so I am ready to get going on this quilt.
