Progress on the step zig zag quilt and more fabric?!!

I quilted a bit last evening and have 15% of the step zig zag quilt quilted. I decided to experiment with this giveaway quilt and throw in some circle swirls every once in awhile as I quilted my signature triple teardrop pattern. I just wanted to see how it would work and I kind of like it.

I was looking at the sale fabric on fabric.com and found a couple more orange fabrics for the quilt I will be making my niece for her graduation present. I just had to had those big polka dots and the fabric with the morterboards was just the ticket to add to the orange fabric I have been collecting. I think I have enough now for this project which will be her t-shirts from growing up.

Here are all the oranges

I also bought these fabrics for three different projects. The peace sign fabric will be for a pillowcase for one of my nephews for xmas, the piano fabric is for that theme quilt I need to make for the end of November, and I just had to have a little bit of the bicycle fabric.

I was gifted these two jars of jam yesterday - blueberry/raspberry and strawberry/rubarb. They will be wonderful with some homemade yogurt!

19th quilt done for 2012

Well i got the LLVL (Livin' La Vita Loca) quilt done on Saturday. Once I hung it on the pipe hanger in my living room (under construction still!) I said to myself - I am sure glad I now have a design wall, because this quilt would not have ended up looking like this! It is just plain off balanced! Well, at least it is done and I will just end up sticking it in the closet anyway. I like the back though. I hand dyed the purple and yellow fabrics. I used COnnecting Threads Essentials color Cornsilk for the main part of the quilt in both the top and botton threads and each of the centers is Sulky rayon on the top and a cotton for the bobbin.

I started on the step zig zag quilt on Saturday afternoon. Here is a blow by blow of my construction for any of readers that would be interested.
I cut 3" strips of fabric the width of the yardage - two strips of each color except for the black car print which I cut about 5 or 6 strips. I joined them with 3" strips of Kona snow using a 1/2" seam. I chained pieced the strips. I had also cut the strips in half so I was only dealing with 22" long pieces instead of 44". Before you do this read on and I will explain how I turned a mistake into a positive.

Next I pressed one of the strips pressing the seam allowance to the dark side.

I then took the next strip, layed the seam allowance next to the previous strip seam line, press it, then flipped the dark fabric of the second strip on top of the first strip and pressed it flat.

Here are three strips pressed and stacked. I do this to line up the strips for cutting. There is no way I am going to cut my patches one strip at a time. That would just take too long! I usually stagger stack 4 strips at a time.

Now I trim off one end of the strips.

Cut the patches at 5 1/2". Save the end cuts that are less than 5 1/2"

Repeat until you have all the patches cut and arrange on the design wall. I did have to make a couple more blocks that I was short on. See the three odd red ones at the bottom? I couldn't find anymore of the red I used for the other blocks. See I am not one for figuring out exactly what I need. I just cut what I think I might need and start sewing.

Sew the rows together.

SInce this quilt is for a 6 or 7 year old and the zig zag part is only 40" x 50" I decided to add a border to make it a bit larger. I cut 5" strips and added the borders at the side first.

I pressed the side borders open and then I added the borders at the top and bottom. I didn't trim the excess until after I sewed the border on.

After pressing the top and bottom borders open, I trimmed the corners.

Remember all those end cuts I saved? Well, I didn't want to waste the fabric so I pieced them together to use on the back.

The pieced accent strip wasn't quite long enought so I added a piece of plain fabric at each end.

I found a couple of scraps in my backing pile that were big enough for the backing. Here I layed down the quilt top and was laying different pieces of backing on top until I found pieces that were big enough. Again, I not much for measuring so I just lay things out until I find what works.

After sewing and pressing, I taped the backing down to my table. I pulled out my pile of batting scraps and layed pieces out until I found enought that would cover the backing. Here is the batting all pieced together layed out on the backing. I free style double cut the batting with my rotary cutter and used a wide zig zag stitch to sew the pieces together. I just butted the pieces together - no overlap - and the zig zag stitch I used takes 3 stitches for each zig zag line. If you use a regular zigzag stitch sometime you will get more of a ridge. If I didn't have the multiple stitch zig zag, I would make my zig zag stitch narrower so the batting doesn't bunch up into a ridge.

Here is the quilt all pin basted and the binding is ready to go. I sewed all my strips of binding together - something I normally don't do, but I think I am going to have just enough binding so I need to used every inch. I will just have to make sure that my seam lines where I joined my binding strips don't end up too close to the corners or it would be hard to do my sewn mitered corners.

LLVL quilt progress and need your eyes

I now have 50% of the centers quilted. Here is a look at a couple more I quilted last night. I plan on having this done this weekend.

I received my order from Hancock's yesterday. I had ordered 30 yards of Moda backing. They sent me two 16 yard bolts - one still wrapped and the other one looked like nothing had ever been cut from it. I just had to measure the bolt not wrapped and there was 15 2/3 yards on it. A little extra! Thank you Hancock's! Gee, I wonder how long this backing will last?

I also bought some half yard pieces of fabric. Here is where I need your eyes - I need to make a piano themed quilt and a drum themed quilt. If you see any drum or piano fabric would you please make a note of where you saw it for me? That way I can check it out to see if I have that fabric yet or ordered some if I don't have it yet. Thanks!

After I finish the LLVL quilt, my next project is to make a step zig zag quilt from these strips of fabric I cut out a couple of months ago.

Have a great weekend!

Not quite done

I worked on the LLVL quilt Tuesday night and most of the day Wednesday. I got all the background quilting done and the binding is finished, but I still have about 25 of the centers to quilt. I simply ran out of steam and time.

After four stages, Cancellara is still wearing yellow and Peter Sagan is still in green. Here are the happy fellows on the podium after Stage 4.

Poor Mark Cavandish, another one of my favorite sprinters, ended up in a crash on the run in to the finish on stage 4. Because of the crash he ended up on the floor and was not able to get any sprint points. He was able to finish the race and didn't look like he got hurt too bad.

More progress on the LLVL quilt, a new appliance, and Stage 2

I quilted while I watched/listened to Stage 2 of the TDF last evening. I like to tape the live broadcast that airs in the morning then watch it after work. I am about 75% completed with the quilting on the LLVL quilt. My goal is to have the completed quilt to show you on Thursday.

Did I get a new stove? A new fridge? No, I got a appliance for my mouth to keep me from grinding my teeth. I did not know I was grinding my teeth at night, but my dentist of more than 20 years says I am.

Stage 2 was 128.9 miles long and here is Tony Martin's arm to show you how dedicated these guys are to riding in this event. He has a plastic cast on his wrist and two plasters (bandages) that were needed after a crash in Stage 1. You have to ride and finish every day or your out.

Mark Cavandish won the stage- Yeah, Mark!

Fabian Cancellara is still in yellow

My boy, Peter Sagan, is the sprint point leader in the green jersey. He is leading Cavandish by only 3 points. Check out those podium girls' dresses!

Have a safe and happy 4th of July!

Pin basting, June finishes review, LLVL quilt progress, and TDF

One of the women, Stephanie, from the MQG came over on Saturday to pin baste three of her quilts. She lives in a small apartment and has no place to lay tops out. We got three quilts pin basted.

I worked on the LLVL quilt on Friday night, Saturday and Sunday. Saturday was the official day the June quilt challange was over so by end of day on Saturday I had about 25% of the LLVL quilt done. I decided to quilt the centers of each block in a different pattern so I layed out all my quilting thread so I could make quick choices of the color of Sulky rayon for the front and cotton for the back.

Here are a few of the centers:
the front
the back

I got this small piece finished on Saturday. It is only 10" x 12" and I debating on whether it should count as a June finish since it is so small, but what the heck. It is a finish! After binding I mounted it on a canvas for hanging. I just used regular white glue. Next time I do one of these I will show you the process.

So my official finishes for June are six plus 25% of the LLVL quilt.

I worked on the LLVL quilt on Sunday and it is now 60% done. Can you believe I had the purple batik binding from when I put together this top 7 to 10 years ago? I also still have a piece of the cream print which I may use for the binding too. I will have to wait until I get the top quilting and then I will decided what color I am going to use where.

THe TDF stated Saturday and Fabian Cancellara had the fasted time in the opening prologue so he is wearing the yellow jersey.

On Sunday Cancellara was able to defend his jersey and still had the best time so he is still in the yellow. My boy, Peter Sagan, won his first stage in the TDF. This is his first TDF and his 14th stage win for 2012. Sagan followed Cancellara up the uphill finish and blew by Cancellara in the last few meters to win the stage.

Today's stage is a flat stage so this will be a better test of the Liquidgas team to see if they can bring Sagan to the line for another stage win. There are several other sprinters in the race so today will be a real test to see who is on top of their game.
