A bit of progress
I ran an errand after work. When I got home, I put some things away, sat down, and fell asleep. I had slept terrible the night before and was tired. I did get two rows (the bottom two) sewn together. The row didn't shrink as much as I thought it might which is a good thing.
The t-shirt backing dilemma is finally over. This was stressing me out. The fellow found this 108" wide backing fabric. I ordered it this morning and it is scheduled to arrive next week.

you won't have to piece the backing and that is always a good thing ... i'm all for taking back our flag - especially after they defaced it with Thing One ... and sometimes a nap is exactly what is necessary to carry on - just sayin'
